The cookies on the computer are the files containing information such as website browsing preferences, server settings, and application sort. When the data is collected, the webserver puts the cookie (card) on the hard drive of the user. If the user visits the site again, the server retrieves the information from the card, then it is used to identify the visitor. What are Cookies? The cookie is a message that the web server transmits to your web browser when you access the websites. Your browser will store the message in a small file when you request another server page, your browser will return the cookie to the server. The cookie is a small file stored on the user’s computer; the websites use it to monitor visitors to hold user details including usernames, interests, Password Remember choice, etc. If any web application uses cookies, cookies will be sent by the server and saved by the client user. The cookies are domain-specific, the domain cannot read or write to the cookie created by another domain, the browser does so for security purposes, the cookies are user-specific, each user stores the cookies in a different location, the cookies created in one browser e.g. in Google Chrome are not accessible by another Internet Explorer / Firefox browser. How does it work? Expires: If this is blank when the user quits the tab the cookie will expire. Domain: Your site’s Domain name. Path: The path which sets the cookie to the directory or web page. If you want to retrieve the cookie from some directory or page this might be blank. Secure: If this field contains the word “safe” then only a safe server can retrieve the cookie. If this field is open, then there is no such limit. Value: Cookies are set and retrieved in the form of pairs with key values. Originally cookies were intended for CGI programming. The data found in a cookie is transmitted automatically between the web browser and the web server so that the server’s CGI scripts can read and write cookie values that are stored on the computer. Why are Cookies Used? Cookies are a simple way to transfer information from one session to another on a website or between sessions on similar websites, without having to burden a server machine with large quantities of data storage. This would also be troublesome to store data on the server without using cookies, as it would be difficult to retrieve information from a single user without needing a password on-visit to the website.
