What is EC2?

EC2 stands for Elastic Compute Cloud, a highly successful service at the very core of the AWS platform, enabling you to easily rent computing, storage, and network connectivity units operating within the massive infrastructure of AWS.

When you choose to provide anything from a community wiki to a fully developed, multi-level mobile business program with your customers, users, or readers with a web-based interface, you can use those resources to build a virtual machine that can work and feel like the real thing to the outside world.

What is EC2?

Amazon EC2 is one of Amazon’s most-used and basic services, so starting with EC2 when you’re new to AWS is sensible. To be very simple and accurate it is a machine with an operating system and your choice of hardware components. But the difference is that it’s virtualized completely and multiple virtual computers can be run. An integral component of the AWS ecosystem is the elastic compute cloud (EC2). EC2 enables AWS cloud computing capabilities that can be scaled and on-demand.

How does EC2 work?

It’s relatively easy to get up and running with Amazon EC2 You have a choice of pre-configured, Amazon Machine Images (AMI) template to use for a quick launch. Or, if you choose, you can build your own AMI that contains all the relevant libraries, files, applications, and configuration settings.

Amazon EC2 lets you configure settings to customize security and network access. After you do that, you determine your AMI instances and whether you want to run in multiple sites or not. You can also decide if you want the IP endpoints to be static. You can do all of that in the AWS Console with minimal friction.

The service’s elasticity reflects the reduced costs that come with a billing model called to pay for what you are using. As you can instantly scale your VM environment to address usage spikes or drops, you have the power to control the number of resources that are being used at any point in time.

It varies from conventional on-site hosting, typically providing you with a limited amount of resources over a given period. This means that in a stable, secure, and elastic Amazon EC2 environment, you usually can’t respond quickly to a change in usage.
